Writing to express his conviction that he has good reason to congratulate himself and his son on her consent to a union. He could not hope to find a young lady more likely to make his son happy. If he has seemed somewhat remiss in not writing before, it is because his son and wife knew that his acquiescence in plans that promise so much happiness could be taken for granted. While at Denmark Hill, she may have guessed that he did not approve, but his objections were to his son's having two loves instead of one. But since the other lady saw that his son could offer only half a heart, she accepted another and his uneasiness has ended. He is satisfied with the outcome, although circumstances caused him to encourage his son's other pursuit, and is very glad that everybody approves of their union. His opinion of her merit and character is best expressed by his readiness in entrusting his son's happiness to her keeping. May Heaven as well as friends on Earth bless their marriage.

Euphemia Chalmers Gray, called Effie or Phemy, was born in Bowerswell House, Perth, and went to Avondale School, near Statford-on-Avon. She married the art critic John Ruskin on 10 April 1848; the marriage was annulled on 15 July 1854; she married John Everett Millais on 3 July 1855. She and Millais had eight children.
